Preschool around here isn’t school to us, just normal life. Regular trips to the library, reading about what we love, living life, and applying what we’re learning is all part of daily life. Summer garden season has caused quite the study on flowers, veggies, cooking, bees, and butterflies. As we continue to add more to our study I’ll share it here, this is what we’ve been doing so far: BooksHere’s a list of books we’ve enjoyed.
ProjectsThe summer garden has begun. Seeds are started, mulch spread, weeding and watering a new routine, and we have a new crop sprayer to help. We’ve got some prairie blazing star, zinnias, Aztec sunflower, and butterfly weed started, and hope to add milkweed as well to our gardens for butterflies. We’re trying Teddy bear sunflowers for cuteness and cockscomb and kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate for some wild and whimsy. My garden is almost full of perennials with little room for much else, which has me thinking about future cut flower garden expansions, but that’s still off in the future. TripsThe franklin park conservatoryWe took a trip to Franklin Park Conservatory and saw the spring blooms, played in the children’s garden, and saw the butterflies. The boys really loved going and especially enjoyed playing in the water. Danny was already showing us which tulips he wanted to plant at home. Blues creek ParkWe discovered this gem recently and were in love with the quiet creek and many birds. We hope to visit when the grasses are tall in the summer and take a picnic lunch. Batelle darby creek pArkThere are several local parks with “pockets of prairie” but our favorite is Batelle Darby Creek. The boys love the bison and indoor living creek at the nature center, and we plan to explore some of their bike paths this summer. Wednesday’s at noon you can listen to the coyotes at the park howl to the tornado sirens and they occasionally do a pre-K story time. In the summer they encourage kid to look for caterpillars and to bring them and the host plant to the nature center which is so fun to actually get to pick something.
