Most books people suggest are new releases, yet I find I can be rather particular about what makes the cut in our house and sometimes there can be a lot said for the classics. With all the children's books out there, it is easy to forget those older books, and our winter favorites don't inlcude any new releases this year. We've stuck to old favorites, all but one being books I read as a kid, but sometimes these are the undiscovered treasures that have been forgotten about.

I hate when great books become forgotten due to their age, and with the mass amount of new books available, sometimes we forget about those amazing, sweet, timeless books. Lois Lenski is one of those amazing authors who wrote books that came alive for all different ages. I personally am working through her chapter books, just finishing Strawberry Girl, which I loved. She did her homework for her books, making them historically accurate and filled with tales she heard from the people she studied. With 98 publish works, I can't share all of them, so take time yourself and dive into her works. Mr. SMall Does it ALL!Lenski wrote several books that little boys tend to love, all about Mr. Small and his various professions. We own Cowboy Small and Farmer Small, but I hope to get the entire collection. I remember The Little Sailboat and The Little Train from my childhood, but some are even new to me. Most can be found online in a new colored print and some as board books, however the board books are simplified versions so I would recommend just getting the hardbacks. American Regional Series and Roundabout America SeriesLenski wrote many series of books and definitely did her research for each book. I didn't list all of the books, but you can find lists online pretty easily. Several have been reprinted and are easy to find, while others have not, and you would need to pay quite the pretty penny for a copy. These books help give the reader an insight to what life was like all around the country. I love this quote from the Forward in Strawberry Girl, "In this series of regional books for American children, I am trying to present vivid, sympathetic pictures of the real life of different kinds of Americans, against authentic backgrounds of diverse localities. We need to know our country better; to know and understand people different from ourselves; so that we can say, 'This then is the way people lived. Because I understand it, I admire and love them.' Is not this a rich heritage for our American children?" Regional SeriesRoundabout SeriesSimilar to her regional series, the Roudabout series works off of her research for her books. The We Live books are collections of short stories, while the others in the series take place in a specific location such as a reservation in South Dakota for Little Sioux Girl or a veterans housing project for Project Boy. OThers BooksThen there are these fun little books of hers that that I'm just dying to know more about. Lenski illustrated her own books, plus several others including Betsy Tacy, so her name is connected to many wonderful works out there. I think Danny would love My Friend the Cow and A Dog Came to School, the others I would love to own. How cute is that cover of Blueberry Corners?!
If it has tires and a steering wheel, Danny is going to be head over heels for it. Right now we're in the mailman chasing, trash truck spotting, tractor envying, stage of toddlerhood and it overflows into his book choices right now, so here are some of our recommended vehicle books:
