Spring activities are finally in full swing and we got a truck and trailer load full of mulch for the gardens. Last year we got gravel and dirt, which little Danny loved, but we never got around to the mulch, and said it was a MUST for this year. Benjy didn’t want to sit and watch, so the boys did most of the work while I entertained the baby. I was annoyed I couldn’t help, but Danny wisely suggested I just rest my body and enjoy being outside with the baby. Little Danny loved getting to watch the frontloader load up the truck and trailer with mulch and said he was “losing his mind” over it. Daddy and Danny worked hard scooping dirt into the wheelbarrows and dumping it in the garden. Little Danny was very concerned about not squashing mommy’s plants and “threw a kerfuffle about it.” (His addition to the story as I read it to him.)

Today was first day of the summer garden! Danny has been dying to plant, so I finally agreed to planting a row of onions. It may be a bit early but he was excited. The moment I agreed to finally letting him plant seeds, he took off for his tractor and grabbed his hoe, shovel, and rake and took them over to the garden as fast as he could. He helped dig up the soil, rake it, get some of the straw out of the way, and was brave enough to collect some worms. Last year worms were terrifying so he was very proud of his bravery. Benjy eats everything so he’s contained in the stroller until he can be trusted, but Danny made sure to tell him about the worms. We have a lot of plans for the summer; hoping to grow a lot more in the garden, trying out meat chickens, have new laying chicks in the coop. We are trying to get a little bit better about raising our own food and we’re hoping to be able to learn how to can and actually store some of it so we can have it throughout the year. Since we don’t have grow lights, we decided to get mostly vegetables that we had to plant by seed, a couple of flowers to try, and then they threw in 3 extra seat packs as a gift. Danny is most excited for the glass of gem corn, which was his pick, and his candy cane beats. This year we ordered seeds from Bakers Creek Heirloom Seeds. We planted our onion seeds and through our kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate seeds into the freezer, as recommended by Bakers seeds. I’m really excited for them and hope that they will grow this year, although they should be planted in the fall, hence throwing them in the freezer to get them sprouting. I keep reminding myself that we learn better from our mistakes than from our success, so I’m embracing all the failures this year and just deciding to see them as an opportunity to learn. Hopefully will be able to blog more regularly here sharing what we’re learning. My computer is still broken, and we’re nowhere near getting a new one, so it’s made blogging a bit more difficult. I still want to share what we’re doing since we have so many big plans for the summer. We’ll see how well we accomplish it all.
