Retrieved from CHICKENS & CHALKBOARDS // JUNE 26, 2016 Why did the duckling cross the road? Because he was a little quacked. I spotted Pancake, our adopted duckling, trying to cross our 55 mph road one evening as I sat with Little Chub on the couch. At first I thought it was a sparrow, but then I noticed it didn’t move like a sparrow, and quickly realized it was the tiniest baby duck unsuccessfully trying to cross from the barn to our house. I knew that if it managed to cross, its tiny squeaking would bring the dogs quickly and he was going to be a snack. Despite how I could hear his cries from inside, the dogs hadn’t noticed yet, so I jumped up, got the dogs in, and was stopped by a questioning husband as I tried to quickly pass the baby off. He decided that he would get the duck, and jumped the fence and chased it down. Danny decided it should be named Pancake, because he said that was what it was trying to become by playing in the road. We let Pancake swim in a toasty bath while little Chub watched with delight. Thankfully the chicks were done with the brooder, so after we let the water out it went into the bathtub along with a towel underneath and a dish of food and water. Little Pancake only hung around for about a week, but little Danny loved watching him swim in the baby bath every morning and liked tickling its feathers with his fingers. He definitely loves his animals.
