Back in the spring we received 20 free chicks from an elementary school. We passed on several to friends and neighbors and ended with 8 for ourselves. Surprisingly, of the 8, only one ended up being a rooster, who for now is still roaming the yard. With all of them being easter eggers except one, I decided to wait and see their coloring before naming them. I wanted a fun theme and my sister suggested doing something botanical. Unfortunately, none of them are laying yet, so I couldn't name them based on egg color, but they all look so different its fairly easy to tell them apart. I don't know why but I just love naming them. We just keep the same name for our roosters since they never hang around very long. Jerry for now is sweet, not a bully at all, and lets Danny hold him without making a fuss. Ivy is our mostly black hen with little gold specks on her feathers. Danny seems to be holding her a lot too. Lilac, our beautiful grey hen, is very shy and never comes close enough to be caught, even when offered food. She spends most of the time under the lilac bush, which is how she got her name. Originally we had picked lavender for her, but lilac seemed more appropriate. Rosie is our one Rhode Island Red, which we kept since we lost our Emmeline two winters ago. She is one of the friendlier hens, typically one of the ones I can catch when Danny wants chick hugs. Marigold is our golden easter egger with golden red feathers speckled with black. She almost glows in the sun as she scampers about. Olive is one of our grey and gold hens and her grey almost can have a blue look to it. I'm hoping to get a green colored egg out of one of them so I thought maybe she'd get the hint from her name. Ginger is our other grey and gold hen, and has a pretty grey beard and long grey tail, which Olive doesn't have. Clover is our other bearded lady, looking similar to Ginger except she had a black head and speckling. The new chicks are yet to venture far from the coop, sticking to the bushes and spending most of their time under the lilac bush. Danny enjoys running under the bush after them and making them squawk. So that makes 18 chickens currently in our little flock, 17 hens, 1 rooster. And if you like names like me here's the whole clan.
